                                Introduction to CRI of SAAS
The Crop Research Institute (CRI) of the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) was established in 1935 and is now composed of seven research centers. The facilities include the National Maize Improvement Center (Chengdu Branch) and the Plant New Variety Protection Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture (Chengdu). There are 119 staff with 14 senior researchers and 30 associate senior researchers, among whom 17 have Ph.D. degrees and 25 have Masters degrees.
The CRI conducts applied research and development in breeding, agronomy, genetic resources and post-harvest processing with an emphasis on agricultural biotechnology. Primary research areas cover the breeding of rice, wheat, maize, rapeseed, potato, sweet potato and legume crops; developing new tillage and cultivation technologies, exploring  novel plant germplasm resources.
Since the 9th National Five-Year Plan, scientists in CRI have undertaken over 400 research and development projects. Some of the important works have included Major Scientific and Technological Projects, International Cooperation Projects and support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Numerous other key projects have been funded by national, provincial and international agencies and private sources,
with total funding contributions amounting to 250 million yuan (RMB).
Over the last 35-years , with unremitting efforts made by generations of scientists, the CRI has obtained 137 government awards for science and technological achievements, among which 12 were national awards, 2 were provincial top grade awards, 20 were provincial first-class awards and 33were ministerial or provincial second-class awards. In addition, CRI has been issued 47 national patents out of 57 patents applications and 51 variety authorizations out of 86 plant breeder's rights and protection applications. Also, 298new varieties have been officially registered, with 32 of these being approved at the national level.
The CRI attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation. It has  established wide scientific and technological cooperation with 27 countries and 6 international research institutions.
In 1996, CRI was entitled by the Ministry of Agriculture of P.R. China as one of the 100 prominent national agricultural research and development institutions, based on its comprehensive strength in research and development abilities. In 1996 and 1999, CRI was  honorably named by the Sichuan provincial government as the advanced institute of Sichuan province. In 1997, CRI obtained a first-grade award by the Department of Science and Technology as an advanced institute of the province. In 2000, CRI was honorably named by the Sichuan government as the advanced agency of the province. In 2004 CRI was ranked No. 1 among the provincial agricultural institutions of China due to its outstanding scientific and technological competitive abilities, as determined by The Rural and Development Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Center of China Rural Technological Development. The Ministry of Agriculture also ranks national agricultural research institutions on their comprehensive scientific research abilities with  CRI ranking 15th in 2007 and being elevated to 7th in 2011.
