What are dental implants and what are their benefits?

If you are looking for a way to replace a missing tooth that is most similar to your natural one, an implant may be your solution. Dental implants are small, sturdy, titanium posts, which act as the root structure would for a natural tooth. A dental implant is placed into your upper or lower jawbone. After the bone has grown around the implant, implants can hold a crown, bridge or over-denture just as roots hold natural teeth in place.

How to take care of dental implants?

Implants are very durable and can last a lifetime due to the fact that they are inserted into the jaw bone. They require the same maintenance as natural teeth; this includes brushing and flossing. It is also important to come in for regular dental check-ups so Dr. Jaleel and make sure your bite is right and the implant is not loose.

What are mini implants?

Unlike standard implants, mini implants allow immediate loading. This means that the patient walks out of the office on the day of surgery with a lower denture that is not only solidly stable, but also can be used to eat immediately. Mini implants can often (not always) be placed in the lower jaw without cutting an incision in the gums. In other words, they can often be placed right through the gums directly in the underlying bone. Most of the time, the only anesthetic necessary is an injection of local anesthetic directly over the position in the gums where each implant is to be placed. Patients can be fitted with these implants and begin using the newly stabilized denture immediately because these implants do not require months of waiting time to integrate.

Implants are not for everyone. If you would like to know if you are a candidate for implants or mini implants, an examination and x-rays with Dr. Jaleel is only a phone call away.
